    Film director Isaac Artenstein discusses Tijuana Jews, a one-hour documentary about the thousands of European Jews who sailed to Mexico in the early twentieth century. His documentary tells their story and provides insights into the experiences of the local pioneers who established the Jewish community in the region. Refreshments and a Q&A will follow.

    Hannah Pankowsky, Holocaust survivor and author, will share the story of her family’s escape from Poland in 1940. After living in the Ural Mountains under harsh conditions, they returned after the war and were entered in displaced persons camps until going to Mexico and then the United States.

    This documentary tells the story of European Jews who escaped Nazi persecution to find refuge in an unlikely destination: Ecuador. Featuring first-hand accounts and archival material, the film follows the exiles’ perilous escape and difficult adjustment as they remade their lives in an unfamiliar land.
    Following the screening Eva Balcazar, a child in Berlin at the time of the Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht) in 1938, will discuss her family’s escape to Ecuador.
